Vaisakhi – Perkash of Khalsa

Vaisakhi is one of the most significant festivals in the Sikh religion, celebrated every year on April 13 or 14. It marks the day when Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, established the Khalsa Panth, the community of the pure, and baptised the first five Sikhs as the Khalsa.

The Khalsa was established by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji as a warrior community that would fight against oppression and tyranny. The initiation into the Khalsa involves the taking of amrit, a sweetened water, which symbolises the union of the individual with the divine. The five beloved ones who were baptised on the first Vaisakhi were asked to take amrit and recite the five prayers of the Khalsa.

The establishment of the Khalsa was a significant event in Sikh history, as it brought together a community of people who were committed to the principles of equality, justice, and service to humanity. The Khalsa was not just a military force but a community that was dedicated to the spiritual and moral upliftment of society.

The celebration of Vaisakhi is an important part of the Sikh calendar and is marked by processions, gatka (Sikh martial arts) demonstrations, and kirtan (devotional music). Sikhs gather at gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship) to celebrate the festival, offer prayers, and participate in langar (community kitchen) where food is prepared and served to all, regardless of their caste, religion, or social status.

Vaisakhi is a time for reflection and renewal, as Sikhs are reminded of the principles of the Khalsa and the importance of living a righteous life. The festival also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the first five beloved ones and the other Sikh martyrs who gave their lives for the Sikh religion.
