Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji – The Second Sikh Guru

Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji was the second Sikh Guru and played a significant role in the development and growth of the Sikh religion. He was born on March 31, 1504, in the village of Sarai Naga in Punjab, India. His parents, Bhai Pheru Mal and Mata Sabhrai, were Hindus, and he was originally named Lehna.

Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji’s spiritual journey began when he met Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, and became his disciple. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji recognised the spiritual potential in Lehna and eventually chose him as his successor. In 1539, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji passed on the mantle of leadership to he who became the second Sikh Guru.

These gurukuls taught not only spiritual but also practical and vocational skills, empowering Sikhs to be self-sufficient and contribute to society.

Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji also played a significant role in the development of the Gurmukhi script, which is the written form of Punjabi and the official script of the Sikh holy scriptures. He worked tirelessly to spread the teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, compiling his teachings in the form of hymns and creating a new script to transcribe them.

He was a humble and compassionate leader who led by example. He believed in the importance of service to others and encouraged Sikhs to engage in seva or selfless service. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, and he himself was known for his physical fitness and athletic abilities.
