Sri Guru Amar Das Ji was the third Sikh Guru and a pivotal figure in the development of the Sikh religion. He was born on May 5, 1479, in the village of Basarke in Punjab, India. His parents, Tej Bhan Bhalla and Mata Lachmi, were Hindus, and he was originally named Ram Das.
Sri Guru Amar Das Ji’s spiritual journey began when he met Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji, the second Sikh Guru. He became a disciple of Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji and eventually succeeded him as the third Sikh Guru in 1552. He is known for his contributions to the Sikh religion, which include the establishment of the Manji system, the promotion of langar, and the compilation of the Anand Sahib.
The Manji system was a system of administration that he implemented to manage the growing number of Sikhs and their gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship). Under this system, the Guru appointed Sikh preachers or manjis to oversee specific areas and ensure that the Sikh teachings were being propagated effectively.
Sri Guru Amar Das Ji also emphasised the importance of langar, the community kitchen, which provides free meals to all, regardless of caste, religion, or social status. He believed that langar was a powerful symbol of equality and a means of breaking down social barriers.
One of the most significant contributions of he was the compilation of the Anand Sahib, which is a hymn of praise and celebration that is recited by Sikhs during religious ceremonies. The Anand Sahib is one of the five Banis or prayers that are recited daily by Sikhs and is a source of spiritual inspiration and comfort.
Sri Guru Amar Das Ji was a compassionate and wise leader who dedicated his life to the service of humanity. He believed in the importance of social equality, spiritual discipline, and selfless service. His teachings continue to inspire Sikhs worldwide, and he is remembered as a visionary leader who played a significant role in the development of the Sikh religion.
