Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji 1st Prakash Utsav

The First Prakash Utsav

The first ‘Parkash’ of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was commenced at Darbar Sahib by the fifth Sikh master, Guru Arjan Dev in 15th day of Bhadon year 1604. The anniversary of the religiously and historically important event was observed with devotion and fervour. On this day a nagar kirtan commence from most Gurdwara and specialy from Sri Ramsar Sahib Gurdwara and culminated at Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Gurdwara before moving through different localities on the route.

It takes place on the 15th day (new moon) of Bhadon, the sixth month of Punjabi calendar, which occur in August or September in the western calendar. This day commemorates the first Prakash (opening ceremony) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji at the newly built Golden Temple in Amritsar, India in 1609.

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

The poetry of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is in itself a subject worthy of the highest consideration. The language principally employed is the language of the saints evolved during the medieval period-a language which, allowing for variations, still enjoyed wide currency in Northern India. Its appeal lay in its directness, energy and resilience. Based upon some of the local dialects, it was leavened with expressions from Sanskrit, Prakrit, Persian and Arabic.

What is more, each Guru speaks in the name of the Founder Guru whose spirit permeates his successors. The House of Nanak is indeed a spiritual decagon based upon a complete, inviolate geometry of vision. The major hymns-Japji (Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji), Anand (Sri Guru Amar Das Ji), Sukhmani (Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji), Rehras (Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Sri Guru Ram Das Ji, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji) are widely recited solo and in congregation by the faithful as morning and evening prayers.
