Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji graced the mortal coil in human form during pooranmashi (full moon). Since then, Sikhs have celebrated this anniversary every pooranmashi for hundreds of years.

Our policy for the Pooranmashi Sangat News is “good news, good will”. We avoid posting political news or news that’s negative in nature, rather we focus on what can inspire and inform. We do our part to create unity instead of division, we do not take sides and we do not promote or condemn any Sikh group. Our ideals are to be universal, uniting, inspirational, uplifting and neutral, and that’s why we focus more on what can inspire us to be more spiritual human beings rather than on controversy and politics

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Pooranmashi Sydney

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the founder of the Sikh religion and one of the most revered spiritual leaders in South Asia. He was born on April 15, 1469, in the village of Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib) in Punjab, which is now in modern-day Pakistan. His parents, Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta, were Hindus, and he was raised in a household that valued both religion and spirituality.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s spiritual journey began when he had a profound spiritual experience at the age of 30. He spent the next 20 years traveling and spreading his message of love, equality, and service to humanity. His teachings emphasized the importance of living a virtuous and compassionate life, regardless of one’s social status, religion, or ethnicity.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings were revolutionary for their time, as they challenged the social and religious norms of the day. He believed that all human beings were equal in the eyes of the divine and that social hierarchies and discrimination were incompatible with true spirituality. He promoted the idea of oneness and unity, which became a cornerstone of the Sikh faith.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is also known for his contributions to the Sikh religion, which include the creation of the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. This book contains the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, as well as other spiritual and philosophical works, and is considered the living Guru of the Sikh religion. Guru Nanak Dev Ji also established the langar, a community kitchen that provides free meals to all, regardless of caste, religion, or social status.

In addition to his spiritual teachings and contributions to the Sikh religion, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was also a poet and musician. He used music and poetry to convey his message of love and spirituality, and his hymns, known as shabads, continue to be an important part of Sikh worship and spiritual practice.

Guru Ka Ghar

Gurdvara refer to Sikh place of worship and service (Sewa). The word can be split into two: “Gur” or “Guru” referring to their Guru, Guru Granth Sahib i.e. Gurbani / Waheguru / the word Shabad and “dvar” meaning “Gate” of the “House.”.

Meditation is any practice – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity.

Pray

Praying means connecting our soul to the Divine Light

Paath & Simran

Paath is in the religious context, reading or recitation of the holy texts and refers to the recitation of Gurbani.
Simran is the remembrance of a higher power that is usually practiced in the form of repeating a mantra. Eg the repetition of ‘Vaheguru Vaheguru’.

Sangat

The Gurus taught that living in the company of the “Holy” is a way to be closer to God. Sangat is an idea of a group offering good community and spiritual support to its members. ‘Sadh Sangat’ is the company of Holy people who are completely dedicated to Vaheguru and who all aspire to the concept of Dharam (truth) – the elevation of the person to a higher and better level of understanding of righteousness and Gurmat.
